Film Synopsis Draft 1 - Creative Project (Zach)

Film Studies
Creative Project – Synopsis
The short film will be about the fact that for many people the internet is an escape when they feel like they are alone. People say that the internet is like a friend when you have no one, however our film will show that this is not the case.

Our anonymous protagonist is very much alone and doesn’t have any friends or anybody he can really turn to. This leads him to use the internet to find someone the same as him so he can make friends and not be alone anymore. However this doesn’t work for our protagonist no matter what methods he tries. He even goes as far as making video blogs and puts them on multiple internet social network sites to gain attention but this still does not work.

The protagonist’s situation worsens when he falls into a depression and starts consuming large amounts of alcohol and starts using drugs. One day after a night full of his vices he is sat on a park bench silently by himself collecting thoughts, when a girl sits next to him. She asks if he is the person she has seen on the internet. This shocks the boy a great deal; she then tells our protagonist about how she has seen his blog and wants to be friends with him. Just like any Drama/Romance film, our film ends the happy ending of the protagonist fulfilling his goals and becoming happy when he gets the girl at the end of the film.

Drama Genre Moodboard - Creative Project (Zach)

Since the short film that I am producing will be of the 'Drama' genre, I thought that it would be effective to do some research on some successful Drama films. This is a mood board of Drama films that I myself enjoy but also many successful films. Doing this research has allowed me to have a better knowledge on the Drama genre and has given me ideas on how to make the short film for the creative project.

Aims And Context - Creative Project (Emma)

I will be producing a short film for my FM3 Creative Project. I hope to achieve the codes and conventions of the drama genre. My short film will be targetted to an audience of 15-25 year olds who have both an interest in films and also of other media texts such as the internet. The aim of the film is to let people know the negative effect of relying on the internet.

I am working in a group with one other person and in this project we will have our own roles such as researching the narritive and genre etc and also joint roles of writing, directing and editing the piece.

Story Type - Creative Project (Zach & Emma)

The Romance - The character is seen to be emotionally lacking or missing something or someone. Something/someone - the object of desire - is seen as a potential solution. The character struggles to overcome barriers between himself and the object of desire and succeeds in overcoming some, if not all, of them. The reloution comes when the character unites with the object of desire (eg When Harry Met Sally, Rob Reiner, 1989, US)

Our male lead is lacking friendship in his life. This leads him to become addicted to the internet and gain an alcohol problem. After trying to use the internet as a way of making friends, the male lead soon comes to realise that this is not working and a video he uploaded to his blog with the purpose of making new friends has a minimal 1 like 3 dislikes.

Characters: Creative Project (Emma)

Male Lead (played by ) - 18 year old male. The name of this character is not revealed as this person represents the whole of the internet community. Personal details are going to be kept to a minimum because I want the audience to feel as if this could happen to anybody. He is looking for comfort through the internet when he feels like he has no one in reality.

Female (played by Sabrina Vizor)  - 17 year old female. The female is a minor character, only seen at the end of the film after recognising the male lead from his online blog. This inspires her to befriend the male lead in the last scene of our film.

Film Studies Revised SSRP Proposal

The films that I have chosen to study for my Small-Scale Research Project are Django Unchained, Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs which were all directed by Quentin Tarantino. I will be studying how Tarantino uses the same actors in some of his films and how most of the actors he chooses are high profile and well established actors. I will also discuss how Tarantino uses repeated themes within his films.
I have chosen these films because I am not only a fan of the films but I also enjoy Tarantino’s work as the director. Quentin Tarantino multi-roles in the films he makes. For example, he not directed but also acted in Django Unchained, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Inglorious Bastards. This is something that as a fan I admire about Tarantino’s film work. This is something I would like to further explore during the small-scale research project.
The films are all related through the fact that they are all directed by Quentin Tarantino and feature some of the same actors and themes throughout his films. Samuel L Jackson features in Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained and Inglorious Bastards. Uma Thurman is an actress who is in Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction. Finally Steve Buscemi is in the films Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs.
I am going to be studying Tarantino’s use of themes that he covers in his films including drug use, race and racism, crime and relationships. For example, in Pulp Fiction Quentin Tarantino covers the themes of crime, drug use and relationships. In my opinion Pulp Fiction doesn’t have a main theme it instead uses a few themes. For instance, there is a lot of drug dealing and taking within the film which touches on the subject of drug abuse. Additionally Samuel L Jackson went to rehab due to drug addiction therefore I think Tarantino made a wise choice casting him in the film. However Django Unchained focuses more on the racism used in the western period of time when the film is set. Although Tarantino also covers themes such as crime in the film Django Unchained. Finally in the film Reservoir Dogs Tarantino mainly uses the theme of crime as the film is based on a group criminals/gangsters planning a bank robbery.
I bought the DVD of Django Unchained for when I make notes on it, I already own Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction so I am currently ready and prepared to start making notes on the films ready for my SSRP. I will also be ordering a selection of books to use as source materials to back up my points in the SSRP. I also plan to have a look on YouTube for interviews with Quentin Tarantino.
